The Loblolly Pine Growth and Yield Research Cooperative at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was founded in 1979 for the purpose of developing growth and yield estimates for intensively managed plantations. The objective of this Cooperative is to develop loblolly pine tree growth and stand development models that are sufficiently flexible to account for the effects of intensive cultural practices and with output sufficiently detailed to allow for analyses of a full range of utilization options. The thrust of the Coop is based on the premise that growth and yield research consists of a continuous cycle of data collection. analysis and interpretation. Existing data sources have been used when possible in various research projects of the Cooperative. In the course of research, knowledge gaps have been identified. These gaps have been used as a basis for designing studies and data collection efforts.
