VIRGINIA FOREST LANDOWNER UPDATE
Our programs are designed to enable forest landowners to meet their ownership objectives through sound forest stewardship and sustainable forestry practices.
The Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program (VFLEP) is a multi-agency educational initiative coordinated by Virginia Tech's Department of Forestry. Lead cooperators include the Virginia Department of Forestry, Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Virginia department of Game & Inland Fisheries, the Virginia Forestry Association, and Virginia's forest products industry. Many other private, state and federal natural resource agencies collaborate with VFLEP to implement educational programs for private forest landowners throughout Virginia.
Since 1996, we have worked together to coordinate and implement education programs for Virginia's 400,000+ private forest landowners who control nearly 80% of the Commonwealth's forest lands. Collectively, these private forest landowners significantly influence the health and productivity of our forest resources. To assist private landowners with making informed decisions about their land, VFLEP promoted the wise use of Virginia's forests, while maintaining the health and productivity of forest resources for future generations.

Specific goals of VFLEP include:
- preserving Virginia's forest land base;
- reducing exotic insects, plants and diseases;
- maintaining a diversity of game and non-game wildlife species;
- promoting the production of quality wood and non-timber forest products;
- generating public understanding and support for the management of Virginia's vast forest resources;
- building relationships between experienced and less-experienced private forest landowners; and
- creating dialogue and cooperation within Virginia's natural resource community and among private forest landowners.
