List of Birds You Will Be Required To Know

The following pages include all birds of Virginia (425). You must know the Order and family and be able to identify by sight each species marked with a  , approximately 190 birds. In addition, you will be expected to learn the vocalization for the 58 species labeled with a  symbol. Each week you will have to know about 15 new species for field quizzes and lab practicals. A list of the birds you will be required to know each week is listed in the weekly species list. This list is cumulative, therefore you will be responsible for all new birds each week, as well as, all birds you learned in the prior weeks. You can find a description of specific characteristics unique to each Order and Family under the lab syllabus section of this website.
