ORDER PROCELLARIIFORMES

You must know the order, family, common name, habitat, and habits and be able to identify by sight each species. There is 1 species on the list.  In addition, you will be expected to learn the vocalization for any species labeled with a  symbol. You can get extra credit for learning the vocalizations of any species labeled .

Order Procellariiformes   Albatrosses, Shearwaters, Storm-Petrels, etc
Characteristics of the order:
DISTRIBUTION: all oceans --more common in southern hemisphere DESCRIPTION: Head and/or bill – tube-nosed (tubular nostrils) seabirds, hooked bill; well-developed sense of smell, gland for concentrating and excreting salt -- in orbit Legs and/or feet – 3 front toes webbed Body –  Tail - tail short  Wings - many w/ long thin wings, held stiffly for soaring Plumage - plumage dense, waterproof, similar sexes  HABITAT: Birds of the sea HABITS: well-adapted for flight, long-lived FOOD: Shallow surface divers, feeding primarily upon invertebrates and small fish  BREEDING: single egg w/ long incubation period, Monogamous, Nest colonially
