Washington County Champions
2/14/01
Washington County recently finished their Big Tree contest, with the top prize going to Aaron Gobble who nominated a white oak with a whopping 252-inch circumference! Washington County had 32 participants; each received a certificate and $5.00. The grand winner, Aaron, received $10 and a picture of her entry is being displayed county-wide in the schools.
New Youth Champ

Congratulations to Mandy Dean, 4-H member from Christiansburg, VA, who found and nominated the largest tree as part of the October, 2000 National 4-H Week celebrations. Mandy's tree, a sycamore, replaces the old champ, a northern red oak nominated by Kathleen Rutt on 5/16/99.

National 4-H Week, Oct. 1 - 7, 2000

National 4-H Week The 4-H Big Tree Program will be the focus of Virginia's National 4-H Week celebration, Oct. 1-7, 2000. Youth between the ages 9-19 who live in Virginia are encouraged to search for big trees and report them to scientists at Virginia Tech. The biggest trees and their nominators will be listed on the Virginia County List of Big Trees.
